This time of year, heading into November, many people believe that construction is slowing down with winter on the way. This can be true, but this is the time of year when planning stages get vary serious for log homes which will be built next spring. Luxury log homes are typically those over 2400 square feet. Also the post and beam style or handcrafted log homes set this class of homes apart from the standard milled log cabin. So let’s take a minute to look at the planning phases for a luxury log home.
The first stage is to select a log home floor plan. It is hard for us to give you accurate price estimates without a floor plan to look at. Some builders even go to the extreme of not bidding on a job until a final set of full blueprints are presented to them. That is a bit overboard, in my opinion, but still they need something to go by. While it is helpful to look at log home plans specifically, it is also useful to look at all kinds of home plans that are within your target square footage. We can turn any home into log house but luxury log homes are more involved, so be sure to carefully consider the features you want included in your home.
The second stage is to contact us and send us your plan ideas. There are about 80 plans listed on our website. Also we are able to do a custom design for you or modify an existing plan. Our stock plans are just a place to start. For example, the Eureka is a popular log home plan with our customers. To fit different people’s needs we now have a few variations of this plan on our site.
The third stage is to locate a builder. This can be done in a variety of ways. One is to ask us for a referral. Another way is to talk to your new neighbors and see what builder they have used in the past. And of course there is also the avenue of looking contractors up online and talking to them personally. It is a good idea to see some samples of their past work and to tour homes they have built. If a luxury log home is built out of handcrafted logs then it is best to select a builder who has experience in log homes.
The fifth stage is to finalize your log home plans and order your kit. This stage can be involved so be sure to build enough time into your flowchart. This stage can take anywhere from a month to several months depending how quickly you decide on necessary changes and how many times the plans are sent back and forth from you to the design department.
And the sixth stage is to have your new home delivered and built. This is never an easy process but is is also very rewarding. Luxury log homes are spacious, impressive, and transcend the scale of regular homes. So don’t be afraid to dream big and pursue contractors and companies based on experience, not just price.
