The term log kit comes from the idea of buying everything from the same company. Log cabin kit options are based on the log shell or timber shell and the other dryin materials. The advantage of purchasing a full package is all of the materials needed to dryin the log home come all together. There are also different levels of log home kits.
The first is a log shell only or a timber shell. This is where we only supply the blueprints for your home and the log shell or timber shell. A log shell usually includes the four exterior log walls, log support posts, log ridge beam, log floor joists for lofts, log staircase, log railing, and log header beam and support posts for a covered porch.
A timber shell refers to a post and beam or timber frame home. It includes the superstructure for the home. Upright posts and horizontal beams fit together provide an exposed beam home.
The next level of a log cabin kit is a dryin package. This is where we include all of the log or timber work and also add in the other dryin materials. Sometimes this is called a “log plus package” or a “lock up package”. The log work would be as described above. The other dryin materials would include things like: exterior doors, windows, roofing, soffit, fascia, exterior door and window trim, first floor subfloor, upper subfloor, interior framing lumber, 1×6 pine tongue and groove for soffits and ceilings. Sometimes we also include the final metal roofing or shingles, depending on the location of the job site.
A full log cabin kit is one that includes all of the materials to completely build a log home. This would include things like the faucets, toilets, flooring, counter tops, cabinets, plumbing fixtures, etc. We feel it is better for the customer to choose all of these materials locally instead of having all of it included with your log home package. If there is a problem with any of the finish materials then the issues can be settled with the local company where it was purchased. In some cases where the owners really wanted a full turnkey package we have supplied them. It is possible, but a log shell only package or a dryin package is much more common.
