Custom designed luxury log home plans are a gathering of your ideas and also features that appeal to you. Because we are a custom log home company we can 1. build to any specifications, and 2. take any plan and tailor it into a log or timber home plan.
The first step in laying out the flow of your home is to make a list of things that are ‘musts’ to you. This works hand in hand with the overall size of home. Unless you have worked with square footage of homes, you may not have a feel for what can be fit into a 1,000 square foot home or a 3,000 square foot plan. Not a problem! The best way to get that feel is to explore floor plans. If you look through our floor plans they are arranged by square footage.
The Under 1,500 Square Feet are mostly cabins. There is room for one or two bedrooms, a small loft, and a minimal great room area. But a small cabin is supposed to be small.
The next break down is the 1,500 to 2,500 Square Foot. These are more spacious plans. These can have two or three bedrooms, a master suite, a good sized great room, and open lofts. But for a luxury log home plan you would want to focus mainly on the 2,500 + Luxury Log Home Plans tab. This is where you would find homes with design features such as log gazebos or turrets, foyers, walk in pantries, etc.
The second step is as you browse floor plans print off or save the ones that appeal to you. If you email me the name of the plan I will send you more information about that specific plan. On the floor plan pages some of the floor plans are displayed in a smaller format. By simply clicking on the plan or image of the home it will enlarge. By choosing File Print in your browser you can also print off the various layouts.
Third, once you have some floor plans assembled take a pen and start circling or crossing out things you like and don’t like. Right here is where the customization process begins. If you have to have a covered entry with a king truss, then circle it. If you desire a curved log staircase then be sure to sketch it in or make a side note of that feature. One owner I worked with recently had a three ring binder with clear sleeves. Inside each sleeve she put clippings out of magazines, floor plans she liked, a fireplace she just had to have, and a kitchen she just loved. From there we were able to take her ideas and work out a rough floor plan, which leads to point number four.
Fourth, now that you have your ideas it is a good idea to sit down with us and work through the ideas. It is not hard to make a price quote estimate off of a plan that is already drawn up, but when a floor plan is going to emerge from a stack of circled photos and marked up plans it can be a bit challenging doing it remotely over the internet… but we have done it a few times!
Fifth, for those who are serious about moving forward with their plans it is a good idea to go ahead and have those plans made by a log home designer. We have found it best for our customers to work directly through us with our designer. When plans are made independently often they have to be redrawn to some extent for the log shell. So save yourself a step and let us assist you with the designs.
By simply purchasing a design contract you can have all the ‘kinks’ worked out of the home. While these ideas are fresh on your mind we take anywhere from a few weeks to few months and iron out all of the room sizes, flow of the floor plan, etc. When you are ready to build your home this will save you several weeks in the lead time between when you make your deposit and when the logs are delivered. So if your ideas are popping into your head you may want to consider a design contract. ** Please note drawings are good for two years. If you are not building for more than two years then the construction drawings should not be finalized until closer to the build date.
Once a custom designed luxury log home plan is finished the next step is to being the log shell and foundation preparations. Even if the actual construction time is a few years away, it can make your home feel so much more tangible to have a full set of preliminary drawings in a 24×26 inch size that you can roll out on the kitchen table and dream over. It gives you a goal. It materializes your ideas so they are tangible. It is never too soon to start planning and it will pay off once your turn comes to order your luxury log home!
