Post and beam construction is another style of log and timber homes that we offer. Post and Beam is where the vertical posts and horizonal beams are used to support the superstructure of the home. Strictly speaking, in a log home context, our Post and Beam homes are built from the handcrafted log style. The roundness of the logs is preserved. Then the traditional joinery of mortise and tenon and dovetails is employed. Post and beam construction is found in authentic turn of the century barns and homes. A traditional style applied to custom homes, make quite a combination.
Our log packages for post and beam construction include just the structural elements of a log home. The post and beams are hand crafted to fit. Douglas Fir is most commonly used for Round Post and Beam homes, but Western Red Cedar and Pine are used at times as well. This type of post and beam home construction allows the homeowner or business owner to leave the logs exposed on both the inside of the structure and the outside. Only premium logs are used for the process. Logs are typically an average of 13″ and 14″ at the mid point and 12″ to 18″ at the ends. Larger diameters, flared cedar logs, and character posts are also incorporated, depending on the design, the individual tastes of the owners, and the overall flavor of the home.
Many times post and beam construction is used in conjunction with handcrafted log homes. The angled prow fronts, as in this photo, is combined with the stacked log walls. The desire for large walls of windows on the view side of many luxury log homes is only possible through the use of the post and beam work.
Post and beam work is also very commonly used for the log roof systems. A log home never reaches its full potential, in my opinion, unless a log roof system is used over at least part of the home. King trusses, massive exposed beams, purloins, rafters, and support posts are all part of the beauty of a log home or timber home.
For a unique style timber home consider a Round Post and Beam home. The use of the traditional elements of the hand peeled log and traditional joinery make each every unique. For a log home a handcrafted log post and beam roof system can be used for either a handcrafted stacked log home or a milled log home.
