Why Log Cabin Kits Are Not Prefab

When you buy one of our log cabin kits for sale you are actually buying a custom log cabin package. The cabin is customized to your needs and desires. Sometimes there is a misconception that a ‘kit home’ is the same as a prefab home. That is not the case. A prefab home is a home that is totally build to completion and then delivered to your job site, typically on a trailer. This distinction is very important when you are trying to satisfy a homeowners association. The differences between a prefab home and a log home kit so vast. Let me explain.

Log Cabin Kits

The word “kit” or “log home kit” was first applied to log homes because the log materials are not readily available at any Lowes or Home Depot. Instead you have to go to a log home company to purchase the logs that make your home a log home. So you go and purchase a ‘log home package’, or ‘log home kit’ to fulfill that part of the necessary materials for your abode.

Prefab Vs. Log Cabin Kits

When dealing with a home owners association, a city, or township, at times you will find that a “Pre-manufactured home”, “Modular home”, or “Trailer home” is not acceptable. In these cases they are typically referring to a home that is built on a frame of some sort and delivered to the job site intact.

A log cabin kit is basically composed of logs milled to a consistent diameter, log wall assembly materials, and construction drawings. The logs are shipped to the job site, off loaded, and built into the cabin on the job site. There is no prefabrication of walls, roof, etc.

Small Log Cabin Kits For Sale

Occasionally we have built some very small log cabin kits for sale that are on a trailer and delivered whole. We can do this only within Montana, due to the extensive permitting that is required if we cross state lines with the cabin. For this kind of small cabin I guess it could be considered “prefab”, but it is made out of high quality materials, unlike most trailer homes.

Any projected costs, cost estimates, material costs, and estimated construction/ building costs, are only the opinion of Cowboy Log Homes and are drawn from our experience. Every home is custom tailored to meet our individual client's wants and desires. The construction of a log or timber home is based on two primary costs: material provided by the log home company and construction costs contracted with Cowboy Log Homes as the builder or another builder of the customer's choice. Final costs are obtained and contracted with each respectively.
