Log Home Options

From exploring our website, there is probably no doubt in your mind that log homes are a passion with us. Below is an article that I wrote for a local trade magazine which explains about the options for log home packages including Random Length Logs, Precut Logs, and Fully Precut Handcrafted log shells. So here is our view of things…

As general contractors since 1997 we have built homes from a variety of log companies. As builders, we have the unique opportunity to evaluate firsthand different companies, products, and services. We not only are builders but also log home coordinators. We work with customers all over the United States, Canada, and internationally. From our experience with companies we are able to select that option which is the most fitting for your needs.

Random Length Logs:

One option is random length logs. A random length log comes milled to a consistent diameter from one end to the other. The log profile of either a D-log, square cut log, Double D, or Swedish Cope is cut. Also the corners are prenotched. Then all of the cutting in of door and window openings is done on site. Some builders prefer the random length logs as then the owners can choose exactly where they want the windows and doors once the log shell is stacked instead of having to make all of those decisions before the logs are cut.

Precut Logs:

A precut log shell comes with the door and window openings precut into the log walls and the corners prenotched. This is the industry standard for precut log shells. If I was building the log home and had no experience with a log home I would prefer the precut log shell to the random length.

When including a timber roof system on your home special equipment, such as a crane or lift truck, is required. The log roof system may only include a ridge beam or it may come with rafters or purloins as well. The ridge beam, purlins, and rafters are cut to the final length on the job site. It is important to have a crane to lift the logs into place.

Fully Precut Log Home Package

These home packages are available in the handcrafted log style and are fully pre-cut and pre-numbered. They come with a log schedule detailing where each and every piece goes. If a timber roof system is included in the home, the timber roof system is also pre-cut and pre-numbered, ready for assembly. All logs are full length wall logs. The electric box holes and wire holes are precut into the log shell. The top wall logs and roof system logs are pitch cut to receive the roofing materials. And also the door and window openings are beveled back and recessed for the exterior and interior trim.

We are convinced that our log homes and timber homes are the best in the world. We are happy to price any floor plan. The process is this. You contact us. Then we listen to your ideas and expectations for your home. We custom design a floor plan, or modify an existing one. Then we draw up a quote. Usually within a week, we contact you with a Quotation Sheet based exactly on your floor plan and on the material and home features you want included in the package. Our homes are weather tight packages, so they come with all the exterior doors and windows, and much much more.

Cowboy Log Homes

Any projected costs, cost estimates, material costs, and estimated construction/ building costs, are only the opinion of Cowboy Log Homes and are drawn from our experience. Every home is custom tailored to meet our individual client's wants and desires. The construction of a log or timber home is based on two primary costs: material provided by the log home company and construction costs contracted with Cowboy Log Homes as the builder or another builder of the customer's choice. Final costs are obtained and contracted with each respectively. Cowboy Log Homes is simply the "glue" that helps bring these two together to provide a final culmination of a customer's project. * Please note photos and elevations may differ some from accompanying floor plans.
